2022 – ANNIVERSARIES OF THE CARDINAL

130th Anniversary – Birth of Elmer Joseph Ritter, July 20, 1892

105th Anniversary – Ordination of Rev. Elmer Joseph Ritter, May 30, 1917.

85th Anniversary – Bishop Ritter’s integration of three academies for girls in the diocese of Indianapolis.

80th Anniversary – Bishop Ritter’s integration of the Catholic schools in Evansville and order that all students wear uniforms to avoid economic distinctions.

75th Anniversary – 1) Archbishop Ritter allowing students from St. Joseph High School for black students to join students from other high schools at the May graduation ceremonies held in the St. Louis Cathedral. 2) His instruction to all pastors in St. Louis to end segregation. 3) His letter recommending excommunication for Catholics who do not obey the decree for inclusion of all students.

70th AnniversaryArchbishop Ritter assisting immigrants resettling to the United States after World War II.

55th Anniversary – 1) Cardinal Ritter’s April 30, 1967, retirement, as required by age 75, in St. Louis. 2) His celebration of 50 years a priest. 3) His death on June 10, 1967 following a heart attack on June 5.

20th Anniversary – The 2002 purchase of the Cardinal Ritter birthplace by Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana and the start of stabilization efforts and capital campaign to save the home. In 2004, the Cardinal Ritter Birthplace Foundation was created and continues to own and to oversee the facility.

Joseph Cardinal Ritter was a son of St. Mary’s Catholic Parish in New Albany, Indiana. He graduated from the parish grade school in 1906 and entered the seminary that fall.

During 2017 many significant events pertaining to Cardinal Ritter’s life were celebrated.

125 Aniversario – Nacimiento de Elmer Joseph Ritter, 20 de julio, 1892

80 Aniversario – La Integración del Obispo Ritter de tres academias para las muchachas de la Diócesis de Indianápolis.

75 Aniversario – La integración del Obispo Ritter de las escuelas católicas en Evansville y ordenar que todos los estudiantes usen uniforme para evitar distinciones económicas.

70 Aniversario – 1) El Arzobispo Ritter permitió estudiantes de la escuela secundaria de San José para estudiantes negros unirse a estudiantes de otras escuelas secundarias en las ceremonias de graduación de mayo celebradas en la Catedral de St. Louis. 2) Su instrucción a todos los pastores en St. Louis para poner fin a la segregación. 3) Su carta que recomienda la excomunión para los católicos que no obedecen del decreto para la inclusión de todos los estudiantes.

50 Aniversario – 1) Cardenal Ritter se retiró el 30 de abril por medio de requisito de la edad de 75 años en St. Louis. 2) Su celebración de 50 años de ser sacerdote. 3) Falleció el día 10 de junio, 1967 después de un ataque de corazón el día 5 de junio.

15 Aniversario – La compra del año 2002 del lugar de nacimiento del Cardenal Ritter de la Fundación de Hito Histórico Nacional de Indiana y el comienzo de los esfuerzos de estabilización y la campaña de capital para salvar la casa. En 2004, la Fundación Cardenal Ritter. Inc. fue creada y sigue siendo dueño de la instalación.
